…for a better past?
I know no way of judging the future but by the past.
The future belongs to those who have reason to hope,
those who have been able to hope through all their pasts
and thus are in the present, which is the past’s future,
simply because their hope has not failed them.
If life grows inhospitable toward my presence,
it is above all because I have lost my sense of hope
somewhere in my past…

Whether we’re wishing for silver or gold
or the newest gadget that’s remote-controlled
Though requests include music, a book or cologne
we really want hope in the wrapped unbeknown
For hope can come in a million small ways
in as many disguises as the gifts it portrays
Don’t add up the worth of the gifts ‘neath your tree
but count all the hope in the giving you see
Each hand that has stuck miles of sellotape
to wrap an unwrappable gift of strange shape
Each finger that merr’ly tied ribbons ‘to knots
Each gift that embodies all your I-never-‘want-nots’
Each witnessing eye and each ear that awaits
Your “ooh” and “aah” which clearly translates…
to:
“what IS it??” 😆
“you shouldn’t have…” 😕
“you didn’t!” 😯
“i love it!!” 🙄
“just what I always wanted!” 👿
“thank you” 😉
Whichever, whatever – may each gift under your tree
serve as a reminder, that HOPE is for free.

On Heaven & Hope
They share the same initials
They weren’t in my past
but they entered my life together
all skillfully wrapped up and
presented in magnificently crafted human form.
Together they represent my greatest gift ever:
“H³”
